Form:  Hwa-Rang

Tae Kwon Do Forms (Hyung) help our students develop techniques, improve their balance and coordination, and enhance their mental focus. Forms also serve as a way to preserve and pass down the traditional skills and movements of Tae Kwon Do.

The new form Brown Belts with Black Tip learn is called Hwa-Rang. The form is named for the elite youth group that eventually unified the three kingdoms of Korea. The form has 29 movements.  Master Penny Duggan demonstrates Hwa-Rang form in the video below.

Hand and Foot Techniques

Master Penny Duggan demonstrates hand / foot combinations.  Use this as a daily workout tool for at-home training to practice your Tae Kwon Do mechanics.  The new techniques to focus on practicing include:

  • Hand Techniques:
    • Offensive:  Knifehand downward strike, Double elbow strike, all offensive hand techniques learned – IN ORDER
    • Defensive: Pushing palm block, all defensive hand techniques learned – IN ORDER
  • Foot Techniques:
    • Flying side kick, all foot techniques learned – IN ORDER
  • Combinations:
    • All combinations learned – IN ORDER

Terminology

This audio track provides the basic terminology for Brown Belts with Black Tip to learn for consideration of promotion to Black Belt.

  • Conduct a Class
  • Brief History of Tae Kwon Do
  • Brief Philosophy of Tae Kwon Do
  • Theory of Power Explanation
  • Advanced vocabulary
  • Five Point Code of Conduct as stated in the History of Tae Kwon Do
  • Prepare a one-page paper explaining your Tae Kwon Do involvement and goals – this will be stapled to your test paper!
  • Test form MUST be signed by the head instructor, Master Penny Duggan

Self Defense

When testing for the next belt level, students are required to demonstrate ten advanced self defense techniques performed on the mats with all takedowns and finishing techniques.  Children and Women will work with the “Encounter Suit” self defense.

Judo / Falling, Throwing, & Finishing

The following falling, throwing, and finishing techniques are required:

  • Forward, backward and side falling
  • Six (6) Judo throws (in order, and say the name before performing)
  • Four (4) Arm bar holds
  • Two (2) Choke holds

Board Breaking

  • Youth [15 yrs old and younger] are required to break one (6) boards.
  • Women are required to break eight (8) boards.
  • Men are required to break ten (10) boards.

Boards can be purchased from Master Penny Duggan at the Redeemer classes.  Affiliate students, please check with your instructors.

  • Two boards – ANY Technique (adults)
  • Three boards – Power break (men)

One Step Sparring

For promotion testing, students will need to execute ten different advanced-level techniques on the floor (not mats).

MEMORIZE the number of each of your techniques when asked to perform – you will need to perform by number (number 3, number 8, etc)

 The Journey

A student’s Tae Kwon Do journey to Black Belt is enhanced by participating in Kim’s Tae Kwon Do Center’s camps, tournaments, and seminars.  Students are REQUIRED to attend the following events to enhance their training with focused instruction.

  • SIX WEEKS of training with your test group at Kim’s Tae Kwon Do Center before your test.
  • SIX MONTH training period is required between Black Tip and Black Belt testing.
  • Must participate in at least one Winter or Summer Training Camp
  • Must participate in at least one Tae Kwon Do Tournament
  • Must participate in several Black Belt Tae Kwon Do Journey Seminars
  • Must keep a Black Belt Journal of your:
    • 10 One-Step Sparring Techniques
    • 10 Self-Defense Techniques
    • 6 Falling & Throwing Finishes
    • Sparring Strategy – List 3 Offensive and 3 Defensive Strategies
    • Board Breaking Routine
  • TYPE up your routines and your one page paper no later than six weeks prior to your test, and send a copy to:
    • Master Penny Duggan
    • Your instructor
    • Your testing partners
    • *** SIX WEEKS – NO EXCEPTIONS ***
